Named for the pale ground, marked like the tall ones that cross it

Every one of them wears a different map. Pale plates edged in bone, no two animals alike, and no two the same on either side of the same animal. We spent an afternoon trying to sketch one and gave up — you cannot copy a pattern that refuses to repeat itself.

They are the only creatures out there that look down at you. Not unkindly. They simply have a longer view of things: they see the whole plain, they see you arrive, and they conclude, correctly, that you are a temporary problem. Then they go back to the acacia.

I have kept this piece for a hundred years and I still take the same lesson from it every time I dust it. Stand tall. Eat slowly. Do not be alarmed by guests.
