Black and bone white, in stripes that do not repeat. We found the pattern first on the animals and later on everything else out there — on cloth, on beadwork, on doorways. It seems the plains had settled on their palette long before we arrived with ours.

A century later it is still the only piece in this house I did not have to explain to anyone.
